How Gas Prices Live Works

Where the Data Comes From

Gas Prices Live uses AAA’s daily state gas price averages as its primary data source. AAA is one of the oldest and most respected sources for retail fuel price tracking in the United States, collecting price data from tens of thousands of gas stations daily and publishing statewide averages for regular unleaded gasoline.

What “Statewide Average” Means

The prices shown on this site are averages across an entire state — not the price at any single station. A statewide average smooths out local variations to give a representative picture of what drivers in that state are paying. Prices at individual stations can be higher or lower depending on location, brand, and local competition.

How Comparisons Are Calculated

For each state we display the current average alongside figures from yesterday, last week (7 days ago), last month (30 days ago), and last year (365 days ago). The change columns show the difference in cents per gallon between today and each comparison point — green for price decreases, red for increases.

How Often Data Updates

AAA publishes updated state averages each morning. This site reflects the latest available data, typically refreshed by mid-morning Eastern time each day. The price date shown at the top of the homepage indicates which date’s data is currently displayed.

How to Use the State Rankings Table

The state table can be sorted six ways — most expensive first, cheapest first, biggest weekly increase, biggest monthly increase, and alphabetically by state name. Use the search box to jump directly to any state by name or abbreviation. Each row shows the state’s current average and its change versus each comparison period. Each state name links to that state’s dedicated page with detailed history, context, and neighboring state comparisons.
