Weekly gas price update

Gas Price Update — Week of July 27, 2026

News Update July 27, 2026 3 min read

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline stands at $4.110 this week. That figure represents what most drivers across the country can expect to pay when filling up, though actual prices vary widely depending on location, local taxes, and the type of gas station. For a typical vehicle with a 15-gallon tank, a full fill-up costs around $61.65 at the national average, which continues to put pressure on household budgets, particularly for those with longer commutes or larger vehicles.

Prices have climbed $0.107 per gallon compared to last week and are up $0.232 per gallon from one month ago, signaling a sustained upward trend rather than a single-week spike. Several factors are contributing to the rise, including higher crude oil prices, increased seasonal demand as summer driving activity picks up, and ongoing refinery maintenance in certain regions that has tightened fuel supply. When both the weekly and monthly changes point in the same direction, it generally indicates that market pressure is consistent rather than temporary.

The gap between the most and least expensive states remains striking this week. California leads the nation at $5.648 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $5.427 and Washington at $5.107. At the opposite end, Indiana sits at $3.494, Mississippi comes in at $3.669, and Texas is at $3.689. Drivers in California are paying more than $2.15 per gallon above what drivers in Indiana pay, a difference that adds up to roughly $32 on a single fill-up for a standard tank.

Looking ahead to next week, drivers should watch for any changes in crude oil prices, which remain the single largest factor influencing what people pay at the pump. Refinery capacity updates and any disruptions to supply in the Gulf Coast region could push prices higher, while a softening in global demand could offer some relief. If the current trend continues at the same pace, the national average could approach or exceed $4.20 per gallon within the next two weeks.
