Weekly gas price update

Gas Price Update — Week of August 17, 2026

News Update August 17, 2026 3 min read

The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline stands at $4.064 this week, keeping fuel costs above the four-dollar mark for drivers across the country. That threshold remains a psychological and financial pressure point for many households, particularly those with longer commutes or vehicles that require frequent fill-ups. At current prices, a 15-gallon tank costs roughly $60.96 to fill, a figure that continues to strain budgets for drivers who depend on their cars daily.

Prices moved higher over the past week, rising $0.054 from the previous Monday's average. Zooming out to the past month, the increase reaches $0.082 per gallon, pointing to a gradual but consistent upward trend rather than a sudden spike. Analysts point to a combination of factors behind the climb, including tighter crude oil supplies, seasonal refinery maintenance, and steady consumer demand as spring travel picks up. None of these pressures appear to be easing significantly in the near term.

The gap between the most and least expensive states remains wide, illustrating how regional factors can dramatically change what drivers pay at the pump. California leads the country at $5.577 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $5.432 and Washington at $5.190, all reflecting higher state taxes, stricter fuel blend requirements, and geographic supply challenges. On the other end of the spectrum, Louisiana drivers are paying just $3.569, with Indiana at $3.585 and Alabama at $3.604, benefiting from lower taxes, proximity to Gulf Coast refineries, and simpler fuel standards. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive states exceeds two dollars per gallon.

Next week, drivers should watch for any developments in crude oil markets, particularly any OPEC production announcements or shifts in global demand signals that could push prices up or down. Refinery activity returning to normal capacity after spring maintenance could provide some relief, but warmer weather and increased travel demand may offset those gains. If the current trend holds, the national average could test $4.10 before stabilizing, though a significant supply event in either direction could change that outlook quickly.
