Weekly gas price update

Gas Price Update — Week of October 19, 2026

News Update October 19, 2026 3 min read

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline stands at $4.295 this week. That figure represents what most drivers across the country are paying at the pump when they fill up, though individual prices vary widely depending on location, local taxes, and the blend of fuel required in each state. For the average American driver with a 15-gallon tank, a full fill-up at the national average costs roughly $64.43.

Gas prices are moving in a favorable direction for consumers. The national average dropped six cents compared to last week and has fallen more than eighteen cents over the past month. Lower crude oil prices and softer demand have both contributed to the recent decline. Seasonal factors also play a role, as summer driving demand has eased and refineries have begun transitioning to cheaper winter-blend fuel formulations, which tend to reduce production costs and push retail prices lower.

The gap between the most and least expensive states remains significant. California leads the country at $6.172 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $5.625 and Nevada at $5.388. These states face higher prices due to stricter environmental fuel standards, higher state fuel taxes, and in Hawaii's case, the added cost of importing fuel by ship. On the opposite end, North Carolina offers the lowest average at $3.610, with Georgia at $3.731 and Texas at $3.777. Drivers in those states are paying roughly $2.56 less per gallon than California residents.

Several factors will influence where prices go in the coming week. Crude oil markets remain sensitive to global supply decisions, particularly any announcements from major oil-producing nations regarding output levels. Refinery operations and any unexpected outages could also affect regional supply. If the current trends hold, modest additional price decreases are possible, though drivers should monitor developments in energy markets closely for any sudden shifts.
