Gas Price Update — Week of October 26, 2026

News Update October 26, 2026 3 min read

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline stands at $4.286 this week. That figure represents what most drivers across the country are paying at the pump, though actual costs vary widely depending on where you live and where you fill up. For a typical vehicle with a 15-gallon tank, a full fill-up at the national average comes to roughly $64.29. Prices remain elevated compared to historical norms, meaning fuel costs continue to take a noticeable share of household budgets for many Americans.

Gas prices moved slightly lower over the past week, dropping $0.010 from the previous week's average. The bigger story is the monthly trend, which shows a decline of $0.202 over the past 30 days. That monthly drop suggests a sustained easing of pressure at the pump rather than a one-time fluctuation. Falling crude oil prices, softer demand as summer driving season winds down, and stable refinery output are among the factors contributing to this gradual relief for consumers.

The gap between the most and least expensive states remains striking. California leads the nation at $6.019 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $5.651 and Washington at $5.305. Drivers in those states pay significantly more due to higher state fuel taxes, stricter environmental fuel blend requirements, and geographic supply constraints. On the other end of the scale, North Carolina comes in as the cheapest state at $3.481, with Georgia at $3.649 and Texas at $3.710. Drivers in those states benefit from lower taxes and easier access to Gulf Coast refining infrastructure.

Looking ahead to next week, analysts will be watching crude oil markets closely, as any movement in global oil prices tends to filter through to retail gas prices within days. Seasonal demand typically softens in the fall as summer road trips taper off, which could support continued modest declines. Weather events, refinery disruptions, or unexpected shifts in oil production from major exporting nations could reverse the current downward trend quickly. Barring major surprises, prices are expected to hold steady or edge slightly lower in the coming days.
