Florida gas prices typically hover near the national average, occasionally dipping slightly below it. The state occupies a middle position in the national fuel market — it has moderate taxes, no local refining capacity of its own, but benefits from reasonably good pipeline access from Gulf Coast refineries. For a large state with enormous fuel demand driven by tourism and a huge registered vehicle base, Florida’s prices are generally manageable compared to coastal states in the Northeast or West.
Florida’s state gas tax sits around 43 cents per gallon when all state and local components are combined, placing it in the middle range nationally. The state tax structure includes a base excise tax plus a sales tax component that fluctuates slightly with wholesale fuel prices, which means Florida’s effective tax rate moves modestly up and down rather than being fully fixed.
Florida has no oil refineries of its own, meaning all of its gasoline supply is imported — primarily via the Colonial Pipeline from Gulf Coast refineries in Texas and Louisiana, supplemented by marine shipments to coastal terminals. The Colonial Pipeline is the primary fuel artery for the entire Southeast, and any disruption to it affects Florida prices significantly, as the state found out during the 2021 Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack when gas stations ran dry within days.
South Florida tends to run slightly higher than the state average due to its distance from pipeline terminals and higher real estate costs for station operators in dense urban markets. The Panhandle region in the northwest typically has the cheapest gas in the state given its closer proximity to Gulf Coast supply.
